Earn Money With Verified Genuine Online Transcription Jobs

Have you considered earning money working from home doing online transcriptions, or closed captions and subtitles for TV shows, movies and educational videos?

If you have, read on...

What Is Transcription?

Transcription is where you convert recorded or live audio into an electronic text document, for business, legal, or medical purposes.

Sample transcription jobs:

  • General transcription: Business meetings, podcasts, radio programs, etc.
  • Legal transcription: Depositions, court proceedings, trials, etc.
  • Medical transcription: Physician's recorded voice notes, doctor dissertations, focus group meetings, etc.

Other transcription jobs include:

  • Captioner: Watch a video and create timed captions synced with the video.
  • Subtitler: Watch a video and translate captions from English to another language synced with the video.

The difference between closed captions and subtitles is that closed captions are intended for deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers. With closed captions, you transcribe a video's spoken content and "atmospherics," such as music and sound effects.

Subtitles are intended for viewers who can hear the audio, but also want to view the words spoken. Hence, with subtitles you transcribe what you hear in the video, without the need to transcribe the atmospherics.

How Much Do Transcriptionists Make?

To answer the question of how much do transcriptionists make, it is important that you understand the difference between an "audio hour" or "video hour" which many websites quote, and the actual hourly rate you might earn.

An "audio/video hour" is 1 hour of audio/video.

The industry rule of thumb is that a novice transcriber would typically transcribe audio at a ratio of about 6 to 1, or 6 hours to transcribe 1 hour of audio, because you have to constantly rewind and replay the audio to ensure accuracy.

A more experienced transcriber can transcribe audio at a ratio of about 4 to 1, or 4 hours to transcribe 1 hour of audio.

Hence, if you are paid $60 per audio hour:

  • a novice transcriber could earn $10 per real hour ($60 / 6)
  • an experienced transcriber could earn $15 per real hour ($60 / 4)

So you need to divide the audio/video hour rate advertised by between 4 and 6, depending on your experience, to work out roughly how much you might earn.

The five companies listed below offer transcription pay rates that range from $20 per audio hour to $180 per video hour.

One company, SpeakWrite, claim you can earn $12 to $15+ per (real) hour doing online transcription jobs for them.
